Native American Paper Sculptures – Awesome

August 12th, 2010

Editor’s Note: I received these via email. I did a quick search and turned up the Eckman’s website at:  http://www.eckmanfineart.com/ If you like what you see here you should visit their site.

Sculptures of Native American scenes made out of paper by Allen and Patty Eckman.

Eckman Fine Art 1

These stunningly detailed sculptures may only be made from paper – but they are being snapped up by art fans for tens of thousands of pounds. The intricate creations depict Native American scenes and took up to 11 months to make using a specially formulated paper.

Eckman Fine Art 2

Husband and wife team Allen and Patty Eckman put paper pulp into clay moulds and pressurise it to remove the water.

Eckman Fine Art 3

The hard, lightweight pieces are then removed and the couple painstakingly add detailed finishings with a wide range of tools.

Eckman Fine Art 4

They have been making the creations since 1987 at their home studio, in South Dakota , and have racked up a whopping $3 million selling the works of art.

Eckman Fine Art 5

The pieces depict traditional scenes from Native American history of Cherokees hunting and dancing.

Eckman Fine Art 6

The most expensive piece is called Prairie Edge Powwow which sold for $47,000.

Eckman Fine Art 7

Allen said: “We create Indians partly because my great, great grandmother was a Cherokee and my family on both sides admire the native Americans…

Eckman Fine Art 8

…I work on the men and animals and Patty does the women and children” explains Allen.

Eckman Fine Art 9

“I enjoy most doing the detail. The paper really lends itself to unlimited detail. I’m really interested in the Indians’ material, physical and spiritual culture and that whole period of our nation’s history I find fascinating. From the western expansion, through the Civil War and beyond is of great interest to me.”

Eckman Fine Art 10

Allen explained their technique: “It should not be confused with papier mache. The two mediums are completely different. I call what we do ‘cast paper sculpture’.”

Eckman Fine Art 11

…”Some of them we create are lifesize and some we scale down to 1/6 lifesize.”

Eckman Fine Art 12

“These sculptures are posed as standing nude figures and limited detailed animals with no ears, tails or hair”

Eckman Fine Art 13

“We transform them by sculpting on top of them – creating detail with soft and hard paper we make in various thicknesses and textures.

Eckman Fine Art 14

“We have really enjoyed the development of our fine art techniques over the years and have created a process that is worth sharing. There are many artists and sculptors who we believe will enjoy this medium as much as we have.”

Acting – Getting Started

April 19th, 2010

by Manish shah

thesbians

If you want to be an actor the first thing you have to understand is that everyone and their grandmother thinks they can act and wants to be an actor. The competition you will face will be monumental. With that in mind, here are some tips on what to do if you want to have a career as an actor.

For starters, you must understand that there is no one way to become a successful actor. Some very famous actors were discovered while doing other jobs and just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Yes, there is a lot of luck involved in this business. In addition to that luck you’ll need connections and a lot of determination. Here are a few ways to get your foot in the door.

Actors Wanted Make up to $300/day

Just about every town in the world has a small theater where they put on local amateur performances. Take advantage of this even if you’re really only interested in film or television. The truth is, acting is acting and it doesn’t change much just because you’re on a stage instead of in a film or television studio. Any practice that you get is only going to improve your chances of getting the gig that you’re looking for. Also, many agents and casting directors go to these small theaters looking for talent. There’s always the chance that they’re going to spot you.

on stage

Next there’s student films. If there is a college in your hometown, most likely they have a performing arts program with students involved in doing their own films. Film students are always on the lookout for talented actors to appear in their films. You could very well be just what they’re looking for. They probably won’t be able to pay you anything and the film itself will probably be pretty bad but it will be good experience for you. Just make sure you get a video tape of your performance and keep in touch with the student director. You never know where this might lead.

Another way to get your foot in the door is to be an extra. Many times when a movie studio is filming on location shots they need extras such as people in a crowd. Go down there and tell them that you’re interested in being an extra. You never know what this could lead to. The casting director may just like your looks and ask you to come in and read for a speaking part, if not for this film, for a future one. Plus, this will give you great experience as you will get to see what a professional film set looks like and how things run. Every little bit helps.

Then there are independent films. Many of these companies can’t afford to hire experienced actors. This is a very good chance to get your foot in the door. Plus there is always the chance that one of these independent films will take off and be big hit. It has happened. You could very well be the next overnight success because of it.

After you’ve built up a bit of a resumé doing the things above, get yourself an agent and put together a portfolio for him to shop around. That’s his job. He’ll have more contacts than you and a much better chance of getting you something.

Most of all, be persistent. Don’t give up. Becoming a successful actor is one of the most difficult things that anyone could want to do but it is also one of the most rewarding. In many cases simply by not quitting you’ll finally land the part that you’ve always dreamed of.

A Guide To Photo Printing Services

April 9th, 2010

by Dominic Donaldson

Do you remember photographs? By this I don’t mean the digital snaps you store on your computer or upload to some social networking sites, but good old fashioned pictures you could hold in your hand and place in an album. For a while it looked as if we’d said goodbye to these forever. There were just so many digital formats to choose from and such a wide selection of ways to share them. However, now they’re back and that is spurring a rapid rise in the evolution and development of photo printing.

Free Photo Framing Service at KODAK Gallery!

online symbolism

This sector first came to prominence when people began to miss old formats. They wanted a way to transfer their digital jpegs into the real world. Companies sprang up offering a service that allowed users to order prints from their computer. However, it was still not quite enough. The quality of such prints was often not what it once was. It was a prime example of new technology offering substantially less than the old.

Now all that’s changing. Increased sophistication of printers and the options available mean people can use photo printing services in a whole new way. Now not only can you have good quality prints you can hold in your hand, you can also create a range of photobooks, calendars and much more. In fact the only limit is sometimes your imagination.

Many people may not be fully aware of the share range of photo printing services on offer. Companies offer an incredible selection to choose from allowing you to create any kind of photo gift you might desire. It’s a fantastic blend of the new with the old that finally allows users to get the most from digital photography.

However, one question still remains. How should you make your choice. As any quick search on the internet reveals there are all sorts of players in this market, each one offering what they say is the best service on the market. How do you make the choice.

the bride

Traditionally, users have made their choice based on price. However, improvements in technology means you may be surprised by how good the finished product can be. It is not too much of a leap to have a finished product that looks, as near as makes no odds, virtually professional.

So price should not be the only consideration when you choose photo printing services. Have a look at what they offer, find samples and case studies. Speak to friends: ask what services they’ve used and get their opinions. The more research you do, the better the gift for your loved ones.

Can’t Print, Won’t Print, Won’t Wait

The Old Way

Digital photography has exploded, exceeding all forecasted figures and many of us have one or more of these great devices, but one of the basic values of photography has been lost in the transfer from film to digital cameras.

Research shows that the majority of digital photo’s are not printed or published in any way, instead billions of photos are sitting on computers and memory cards all over the world, hidden away in cyberspace.

This is a sad prospect as passing photographs through friends, family and generations has been a tradition for many years, reminding us of our ancestors and memories of times gone by. Photographs gain importance with age and there is a pleasure in flicking through old photos. It should be remembered that it may not always be possible to view photos held on today’s digital media, as progress may backdate the media type and the compatibility to read them. We should therefore not overlook the importance of making actual prints of our precious digital snaps.

The New Way

The major reason for our reluctance to print digital photos is the perceived complications in printing a quality digital print, but with digital photo kiosks, affordable photo printers and easy to use software, it is really not that hard. It is entirely possible for the novice computer user to produce great quality prints from their digital camera using the home photo printer.

Generally speaking, getting a picture from your digital camera to your printer normally involves these simple steps:

  1. Copy images from camera to a folder on your computer.
  2. Load up your printing software and choose the images you would like to print.
  3. Select the size and type of paper you are using (always use photo paper).
  4. Print your photos.

A great new function on many of the latest cameras and printers cuts the process right down. The PictBridge print system is probably the easiest way of getting your images from your camera on to photo paper. This system does rely on having both a PictBridge compliant printer and a PictBridge compliant camera, but most new photo printers and cameras on the market will have PictBridge as standard – but it’s worth checking out if you are about to buy a printer or camera.

real photo printer

The PictBridge system allows you to print directly from your camera to the printer without the use of a computer. You can select photos, print size and quantities, all from the screen of the camera and process the print with a button!

The great thing about printing your own pictures is that you have total control, choice and discretion. You can print as many copies as you like, choose various sizes and finishes and using photo editing software, you can tweak your pictures as a dark room technician would, or even get creative! In fact half the fun of digital photography is what you can do with the printing of the photo.

What Is The Difference Between A Digital Camera And A Digital SLR Camera?

April 8th, 2010

by Michael Arendt

Olympus DSLR Set

In this article we hope to be able to explain the difference between a normal digital camera and a digital SLR camera. When choosing and purchasing a new digital camera, there are some important elements of photography that you need to familiarize yourself with.

girl in viewfinder

To get us started “SLR” stands for Single Lens Reflex. Essentially this means that the lens can be removed and replaced whenever required. A regular SLR camera is a conventional film based SLR camera whilst a digital SLR (DSLR) is a digital SLR camera. DSLR or SLR cameras compared to a normal fixed lens digital camera, are far more complex to use, as certain features and settings within the camera have to be manually changed – such as focus, shutter speed and zoom. These are aspects of a digital camera that most people take as a given, as they are automatically set within the camera. These days, for your benefit, most DSLRs have some pre-set automatic functions – this being the functionality of digital cameras! Along with this, a DSLR can have the lens removed and replaced, meaning that the photographer can take extremely close up images of tremendously high quality.

Shop Calumet Photographic for this week’s MUST HAVE item:

The reason why DSLRs are so frequently preferred by professional photographers is because they allow an accurate preview of framing at the moment of exposure, and because DSLRs allow the user to choose from a huge variety of alternate lenses. This gives you the best possible choice of photographic effects and quality of exposure. You can get lenses such as wide angle lens, telephoto lens and macro lenses. DSLR cameras offer a level of flexibility that other types of cameras cannot match, they have such a huge array of add ons and accessories. For DSLRs you can buy things like filters, external flashes, adapters, extension tubes, light strobes and a multitude of brackets and attachments. With a DSLR, you can also purchase a large array of tools which opens the possibility of new creative possibilities. Most DSLRs also have a function that allows accurate preview of depth of field.

Lego Camera

Perhaps the most important core component of any digital camera or DSLR is the sensor. This really is the most critical device in the camera and is perhaps the most important in determining the picture quality. Typically on a DSLR the sensor is far larger than those installed on a fixed focal length or digicam type camera. Most of the time fixed focal length cameras have a sensor just a half or one third the size of a DSLR. This in itself is reason enough to get a DSLR over a normal digital camera. The vastly superior picture quality makes it an essential part of any serious photographers arsenal.

A DSLR camera can offer you the ability to become a very skilled photographer, producing some high quality photographs. When you visit a professional camera store they will assist you in making your choice between a digital camera and a digital SLR camera.
