Hobbies and Crafts

Saturday, February 25th, 2012

Whether you’re 99 or not even in double figures, many an hour can be passed indulging in a hobby or craft that you love. Not only does a craft have therapeutic benefits, it keeps your mind and creativity active and might even lead to a career, a profitable part-time enterprise or just a way of always coming up with inventive and unique gifts for people.

Pay a visit to your local art supplies store and you’ll find much more than paints and brushes. You’ll be confronted with an Aladdin’s Cave of materials and tools to turn your living room table into a mini workshop or studio. One of the great things about taking up a handicraft as a hobby is that art shops really can take you from being a wide-eyed beginner to being a seasoned pro thanks to their stocks of difficulty-rated products.

The best way to start a new craft is to get a kit of some sort. These can be quite inexpensive and will usually include everything you need to put your toe in the water and see if you like that particular hobby. For example, a basic candle-making kit might include moulds, flaked wax, stearin (or stearic acid), dyes, wicks and perhaps even some scent. All you’ll need to bring to the party is a box of matches.

As you become more confident in your craft, you’ll probably grow out of kits and want to start experimenting a little. You’ll then be ready to move on to purchasing individual craft materials and tools, building up your collection and replenishing consumables as you go. Suppliers like http://www.pullingers.com have all kinds of craft materials and equipment to help you learn and improve your skills. Once you’ve mastered your candle making kit, for example, and got to grips with the science and the techniques, you might want to start making your own moulds, and buying individual bags of wax and trying out new decorative techniques and aromas.

If you really love hobbies and crafts and you have a genuine talent for it, you never know, you could make it pay for itself or even turn a profit. Craft fairs are superb way to get started and to gauge public opinion; family members and friends are not reliable critics. Fairs often take place in village halls, at flower shows and during civic celebrations, and others are weekly, monthly or seasonal events. If you take a little time to create an attractive store front and talk to potential customers, you could be surprised at your success – so make sure you take a bit of surplus stock. And don’t forget to get some business cards or leaflets printed as customers might want to become regulars.

Another way into the marketplace is to offer your goods to a local gift shop. With a sale or return arrangement, there’s no risk to either party, and with the shop taking a cut of the ticket price, you might find the shopkeeper phoning you for more stock sooner than you think.

With a little more investment you could even set up an online store and really make your hobby work for you. Better still, try all three routes to really get your name around.

So whether you like to paint, model, decorate pottery, make jewelery or ornaments or want to try making something that has been buzzing around your head for months, have a root around an art supplies shop and get creative – it might just change your life.
