There are different forms of art used in painting and this are: the abstract, landscape, portraits, and oil painting. Of all these, oil art creations are dominant because of their unique beauty and almost realistic adaptations of their subjects. Painting using oil acrylics, however, is no piece of cake. A painter must have an expertise over art and have sufficient knowledge on the right techniques and materials to be used.

In oil painting, the paints are mostly added with solvents so it can dry evenly. Solvents, also called diluents, are mixed to dissolve certain resins and make the paint thinner. It is also used to clean up oil paints stains on brushes. Using solvents require proper attention because when it evaporates it creates gas-like substance and could be toxic when inhaled in large amount. Use it on a well-ventilated room and keep it away from heat or fire because it is flammable.

There are different types of solvent but the most common is the turpentine. This is a solvent that is made from a tree resin base. It can evaporate fast once exposed to the air and its vapor could be harmful to man. Turpentine should be applied carefully because it can pass through our skin and cause irritations. In buying turpentine, buy the painter’s quality solvent and do not settle for cheap turpentine sold in hardware stores because these may contain impurities that can affect the quality of your paint.

Another commonly used solvent in oil paintings are the mineral spirits. This solvent which is also known as the white spirits is petroleum-based and has an average evaporation rate. Just like turpentine, it also releases harmful vapors so taking precautions is necessary when using this. Compared to odorless spirits, mineral spirits are considered one of the strongest solvent used on painting. Odorless mineral spirits, moreover, is another solvent which is also petroleum based and has an average evaporation rate just like the mineral spirits. It is less hazardous than the white spirits but people with sensitive skin should not go near it. This solvent is more expensive than other solvents because its normal aromatic harmful components are already removed.

Thinners are essential in making oil paintings. When it comes to thinners, however, one must remember that even the most pleasant smelling citrus-based ones also give off harmful vapors. In buying and using thinners, checking the components of the solution should be done to ensure the safety of the user. Alkali-based mediums, moreover, are solutions that aid oil acrylics to dry quicker. Another element is the resins. It is used to increase the gloss of the paint, make the drying of the medium faster, and reduce medium color.

In using solvents, thinners, and resins, it is important to test it if the solutions are compatible with the oil acrylic. To put the solvent into a test, drop a little of it on a piece of paper and wait until it evaporates. If the solvent does not leave any stain or smell, then it is a good one and can be used as mixture in oil painting.

Of all the many types of paintings, oil creations are considered as one of the most admired because of the way they capture the life and reality of their subjects. Oil paints are also very versatile so they can be easily used to almost any style and technique of painting. For example, they can be utilized for impastos with thick textures and glazes with thin stroked. They can also either be transparent or opaque. With these many styles of oil paints, it is no longer surprising that they are probably the most favorite among artists. The flexibility of oil art materials, however, is still dependent on the mastery of the artist. Fortunately, there are some simple painting tips which can make a budding painter seem like a professional.

The first tip in oil painting is to never leave oil paints disorganized. Always arranging the same order of oil paints in a palette is a very important for painters because through time, this will help the artist develop the instinct of picking up a color without even looking at it. This in turn, will give them more mastery to the blending and applying of colors. Another advice when doing paintings is to use the ‘fat over lean’ technique. This simply refers to how the proportion of an oil paint should be increased for an oil painting’s subsequent layer. This technique is very important because the lower levels of paint absorb the oil from the upper layers. Therefore, the lower layers can crack in situations when the upper layers of oil paint dries first.

The next tip in painting is to refrain from using an Ivory Black hue for sketching as in underpaint because oil paints dry faster than the Ivory black hue. Oil pigments made from cobalt, manganese, and lead makes the drying of the medium faster. They can also be combined with other paints to speed up the drying. Materials having these components are also ideal to use as under layers. For those who do not have enough budgets to purchase materials such as these because they are quite costly, student-quality paints are a good alternative because they possess cheaper components which can also enhance the drying process.

Another tip in doing paintings is to use linseed oil when doing underpaintings. Linseed oil is good to use when doing the bottom layer of a wet-on-dry painting because it helps the paint to dry evenly and thoroughly. On the other hand, linseed oil should never be used as medium for a painting with mostly whites and blues because it has the tendency to turn the painting yellow through time. Therefore, it is also not advisable to use it for light colors because it can cause an old, brittle look to a painting. Poppy oil is recommended for use instead because even though it dries slowly, it has the least possibility of yellowing. The last painting tip is to never dry an oil artwork in the dark. If this is done, a thin layer of oil film may surface on the painting and cause yellowing.

So you’re stood in your local art store having decided you’d like a dabble with watercolours and you’ve made it to the paint section. In front of you lie a multitude of colours and you can’t possibly make a decision with such little experience in painting.

Well, let’s start to narrow it down a little. First of all were going to go for the student quality paint. Winsor and Newton do a great Cotman budget range in large 21ml tubes that I use myself. They’re of excellent quality and will put you in good stead as you begin your watercolour journey.

I only use seven colours for all my paintings – Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, Light Red, Ultramarine Blue, Lemon Yellow, Payne’s Gray and Alizarin Crimson.

Limiting your palette this way will help you get more intimate with your colours and you will quickly learn how they react when mixed together. With experience you will instantly know which colours to mix to replicate any colour that you see in nature.

My first colour, Raw Sienna, I use more than any other on my palette and is present in practically all my paintings. I start off many a sky with a light Raw Sienna wash and it’s also prominent in much land detail. You’ll find it an excellent companion.

Burnt Umber is a good earthy colour and really comes into its own in winter scenes as the earth sticks out from the snow. Mixed with Ultramarine Blue it’s possible to get a whole range of greys, useful for cool shadows.

Light Red is a strong, fiery colour and only used in moderation – too much and it will dominate your palette. A tube of red will last an eternity! Never use it on its own. Mixed with Burnt Umber it’s an excellent substitute for Burnt Sienna. Used with Ultramarine it will produce some lovely warm shadows.

Ultramarine Blue is predominant in many of my skies. It is also used with Lemon Yellow to produce a whole range of greens. Note there is no green on my palette, I prefer to mix them myself.

Lemon Yellow is an essential colour for my greens. A little with more Ultramarine will push your trees towards the horizon. As you come closer add more Lemon Yellow to warm the mix up for the foreground.

Payne’s Gray can be used with many of the colours to generally darken the mix. I like to add it to Lemon Yellow to create rich, dark greens for foreground trees and foliage.

Alizarin Crimson is the second of my red colours and just like the Light Red, a tube of this will go a long way. I probably use it most with Payne’s Gray for cloud shadows in the sky. Used with Ultramarine Blue it makes a cracking sky colour in winter scenes and looks lovely against the white paper as the shadows dance along the snow.

These seven colours have stood me in good stead. I generally try to use as few as possible to keep the colours harmonious in the painting. Often, especially in winter scenes, I’ll restrict myself to just three – Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue. Remember – practise makes perfect. Happy painting!
