Lighting can be a nightmare and ruin a perfectly good photo, so it’s best to be aware of what light you will be working with throughout the night. Flash is almost always necessary, but most cameras onboard flashes can’t light up more than 6 feet, so get close. If you are using an external flash, you have more wiggle room.
